Choosing a European removal company is harder than hiring a local mover. Your belongings cross a border, which brings customs paperwork, different insurance rules and longer transit times. These 10 questions help you compare quotes properly and avoid surprises.
1. Who handles the customs paperwork?
Since Brexit, household goods moving between the UK and the EU need declarations. Ask whether the company prepares and submits them (for example export and import declarations, ENS and transit documents) and whether this is included in the quote or charged separately. See our household goods customs service.
2. Is the price fixed or an estimate?
Ask what is included: packing, loading, fuel, tolls, ferry or tunnel crossing, unloading and any waiting time. Request the quote in writing.
3. Part load, full van or van and trailer?
A part load shares space and suits a few rooms of belongings. A full van suits a one or two bedroom home. Ask which option fits your volume and what the price difference is. Read our guide to part load or full van to Europe.
4. What insurance is included?
Ask for the cover limit, what is excluded (for example items you pack yourself) and how a claim is made. Check cover applies for the whole journey, including the crossing.
5. Is it a direct collection and delivery?
Some firms transfer goods between vehicles or depots. A direct service usually means less handling and fewer delays.
6. What are the timings?
Ask for the collection window, the expected delivery date and how delays at the border are handled. Since the EES border check began at Dover, allow extra time on busy days – our Dover EES guide explains why.
7. Who packs and what materials are used?
Professional packing reduces damage and helps with customs inventories. Ask whether packing is optional and whether materials are included.
8. Can they list and describe your goods for customs?
A clear inventory speeds up clearance. Ask whether the company prepares it for you, and see our customs inventory guide for what to list.
9. How do they handle access and parking at the destination?
Narrow streets, apartment blocks and permit zones in European cities can need advance planning. Ask whether they check access beforehand.
10. Can you speak to a real person?
Look for a named contact, a phone number and quick answers by email. Reviews from customers who moved the same route are a good sign.
