Moving to Málaga from the UK in 2026: 7 Practical Tips

Coastline of Málaga with the cathedral in the background

Málaga has more than 300 days of sunshine a year, a lively historic centre, city beaches and an international airport with direct flights to most of the UK. It is also the gateway to the Costa del Sol, which is why so many people are moving to Málaga from the UK. Here are our practical tips for moving to Málaga in 2026.

1. Check your visa or residence route first

UK nationals can visit Spain for up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. To live in Málaga you need the right visa or residence permit, for example for work, a non-lucrative visa or a digital nomad visa. Start with the GOV.UK guide to living in Spain, and sort the visa before you fix your removal date.

2. Plan the paperwork for your first weeks

  • Padrón: register at the town hall (Ayuntamiento de Málaga). You will need it for many other steps.
  • TIE: your residence card. GOV.UK explains how to register as a resident and get a TIE.
  • Healthcare: register through your job, or arrange private cover if your visa needs it.
  • Driving licence: check the GOV.UK rules on how long you can drive on your UK licence once you are resident, and when to exchange it.

3. Know the low emission zone before you drive in

Málaga has a low emission zone (Zona de Bajas Emisiones, ZBE) with cameras. Vehicles without a DGT environmental label that are registered outside the city can be fined €200 for entering. The rules have been challenged in court and the timetable for further restrictions may change, so check the latest information on the Málaga mobility website before you drive your own car there. If you later re-register your car in Spain, it can get a DGT label based on its emissions.

4. Plan van access in the old town

The historic centre has narrow streets, large pedestrian areas and very little parking. Many flats are in older buildings with small lifts or none. Measure big furniture before moving day and ask your landlord or community about access and any permit needed to use the street. Avoid moving during Semana Santa, when processions close streets in the centre, and during the August fair.

When you move with MoveDay Removals, we plan the right vehicle and access for your street before moving day.

5. Get the customs paperwork right

Household goods going from the UK to Spain cross an EU customs border. You will need a full inventory and the correct declarations. If you are moving your normal home to Spain, you may be able to bring your belongings in without import duty under transfer of residence relief, as long as you meet the conditions. Read our UK Customs Guide 2026 and what you can and can’t take on a removals lorry to the EU, or let our customs team handle the forms.

6. Choose your area

  • Centro Histórico and Soho: shops, bars and culture on your doorstep, but tricky for vans.
  • La Malagueta and La Caleta: close to the beach and the centre. Popular and pricier.
  • Pedregalejo and El Palo: old fishing districts with a relaxed beach feel.
  • El Limonar: quiet, green and popular with families.
  • Teatinos: modern flats near the university and the hospital.
  • Costa del Sol towns: Benalmádena, Fuengirola and Marbella are a short drive or train ride away.

7. Make the most of the city

Málaga has a metro, city buses and a commuter train along the coast to the airport and Fuengirola. Join local expat groups before you move to get tips on renting, schools and paperwork. Also comparing other Spanish cities? Read our tips for Valencia and Madrid.
